Newcastle United and Aston Villa are in the mix to sign Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro in the summer.
The Villans’ interest isn’t new as they wanted to sign him last summer, but a deal never took shape. Unai Emery’s side are back and Newcastle United join them in the transfer chase.
In May 2025, Sport Witness relayed news of Aston Villa’s interest in the goalkeeper. A month later, he confirmed their interest but said the English club weren’t the only to keep an eye on him.
However, the 31-year-old didn’t change clubs and is still with the La Liga side and has been a regular this season.
His league stats are as follows:
- Appearances: 33
- Starts: 33
- Total minutes played: 2,970
- Clean sheets: 3
- Goals conceded: 52
- Saves: 82
- Saves per game: 2.6
Newcastle United and Aston Villa interest
The latest claims from Spain cover Barcelona’s interest in Álex Remiro. Saturday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo backs it up, provides the latest and also reports on Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
Hansi Flick’s side have already held several meetings with the stopper’s agent. With his contract expiring in 2027, his release clause drops from €50m to €12m.
For now, this operation is on the back burner as the La Liga winners are prioritising other deals. Barcelona are not ruling out his arrival on a free transfer once his contract expires in 2027.
Real Sociedad, for their part, want to avoid this scenario and have informed him of their desire to extend his contract.
The goalkeeper is asking for time as he wants to find out whether Spain manager Luis de la Fuente will take him to the world Cup.
La Real have accepted his request, while the time is on the Spain international’s side. While the Camp Nou side have other priorities, they are studying the feasibility of signing him in the summer or 2027.
Remiro’s contract situation is also attracting interest from Inter Milan, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
Inter have made contact, while Eddie Howe’s side and Aston Villa are ‘insistent’ on signing him. His new clause of €12m is affordable for the Premier League duo. As of now, none of these clubs have submitted an offer.
Newcastle United need new goalkeeper
The Magpies have Nick Pope, Aaron Ramsdale, Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy as the four goalkeepers at St James’ Park.
Gillespie and Ruddy have contracts expiring in June, while Ramsdale is on loan from Southampton. Pope has a contract until 2027 and his future at the Premier League side remains uncertain.
Álex Remiro can be an option for Newcastle United and his €12m clause would be within the Tyneside club’s reach. Transfermarkt value the Spaniard at €14m.
