Brighton have made a move for Red Bull Bragantino defender Gustavo Marques, with negotiations now underway over a potential move to England.
Globo Esporte report the Seagulls have offered €8m (£6.9m) for the centre-back. Talks between the two clubs are ongoing, although there is no agreement yet.
Journalist João Van Boysen backs up Brighton’s strong interest and the €8m (£6.9m) bid. And he adds an important detail from the Brazilian side: Bragantino are expected to turn down the opening offer.
They believe they can get more for Marques.
Brighton put money on the table
Brighton will have a decision to make as the end of the window approaches. The first proposal is in, and Globo Esporte’s information suggests the clubs remain in contact.
Marques has given Bragantino good reason to value him highly. He’s been one of the standout players in their strong league campaign this year. The defender has made 35 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and leading the team’s defensive rankings.
Standing at 1.89m, Marques is a physically strong centre-back and offers plenty in the opposition box as well. His only goal this season came with a header, making use of the aerial presence which is an important part of his game.
Bragantino want Brighton to go higher
The Brazilian club’s position, according to Van Boysen, now appears to be the main obstacle.
They aren’t expected to accept €8m (£6.9m) as things stand. Brighton would therefore need to improve the financial side of their proposal if they want a quick agreement.
There is at least something to work with here. Globo Esporte say negotiations are ongoing, which suggests Bragantino haven’t simply closed the door after Brighton’s approach.
With Marques enjoying a strong season and established as a regular, his club are in a decent position to demand more.
Brighton have made the first move. Now Bragantino appear to be waiting to see how much further they’re prepared to go.
