Aston Villa are among the clubs considering signing Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro this summer.
On May 20th, we covered claims from AS which stated Unai Emery is leading Aston Villa’s pursuit of the 30-year-old. They also said he has a €70m release clause in his contract that expires in 2027, although he’d surely go for less.
Remiro spent a decade at Athletic before leaving them for Real Sociedad in 2019. As well as Aston Villa, Barcelona have been credited with interest in the stopper.
El Diario Vasco have published a detailed interview with him, during which they specifically asked whether he’s aware of interest from Aston Villa and Barcelona.
Responding to that, he said: “Yes, I know, but they’re not the only ones who’ve been following or watching me. It’s not that difficult either because Real Sociedad have played in Europe for five years in a row, and we played at a high level in the Champions League last year.
“Against Barcelona, for example, we had great matches; we beat them 1-0 at Anoeta. We haven’t played Aston Villa yet. But it’s not just these two teams anymore; all the clubs are keeping an eye on everything that’s happening, and I’ve had some good years, and I think that, given the goalkeeping style that’s sought after today, I can give them that. I’m not just talking about those teams, I’m talking about them in general. But yes, I’m aware of it, and it’s there.”
The Spain international admitted he’s pleased that the likes of Unai Emery’s side and the Catalan club are keen.
When asked how he receives this, Remiro explained: “I think it’s good. It calms me down because it doesn’t upset my feelings, my emotions, or my daily life. I know what I’m capable of, what I’m not capable of, and what I want. It doesn’t do anything bad to me. It’s good that people notice you, but that’s it.”
His compatriot and Espanyol star Joan García is also being linked to Villa.
Emiliano Martínez has been the first-choice goalkeeper at Villa Park. The 32-year-old Argentine international has stated he doesn’t know whether he will be at the Premier League club next season.
Faced with the uncertainty around his future, Aston Villa are looking at a few goalkeepers in the market.
