On November 17th, we covered claims from Italy that Sunderland and Brentford have shown interest in AC Milan’s Santiago Giménez.

A day later, Tuttosport indicated a fee around €25m would be enough to take the striker away from Milan in the winter market.

On Monday, Calciomercato reported Sunderland could have an edge over Brentford in the signing race. They also stated Fenerbahçe are keen, and the Serie A side want to recoup the €30m they paid to sign him in February.

Sport Mediaset now claim Sunderland have taken steps to try and sign the 24-year-old.

They were high expectations for the Mexico international to deliver when the Rossoneri invested €30m to buy him. So far, he’s failed to deliver, scoring one goal [in the Coppa Italia] and contributing two assists this season.

Therefore, the Italian club could consider parting ways with the frontman in January, and Sunderland are an option. Journalist Claudio Raimondi shares the information about the Black Cats.

He claims Sunderland are ‘already in contact’ with Giménez’s agent Rafaela Pimenta. The journalist adds Régis Le Bris’ side would like to propose a loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy.

Sport Mediaset states: ‘For their part, AC Milan don’t want to lose too much financially, but if he leaves, they should still replace Giménez.’

Santiago Giménez may have struggled at AC Milan, but he’s still only 24, did very well at Feyenoord, and has the makings of a cult hero for a club like Sunderland.

Imagine the sombreros.
