Sunderland may have the edge on Brentford in the race for AC Milan striker Santiago Giménez in the January transfer window.

That’s according to Calciomercato.

They explain that Giménez is on the market. AC Milan are open to a sale as his struggles at the club have not gotten any better. The belief is that he is now at a point of no return.

He could have moved to Nottingham Forest in 2024 instead of AC Milan, and such a step may have been better.

His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, is already working to satisfy all parties. She is likely to leverage her contacts in the Premier League. And on that front, Sunderland and Brentford are considering him for the January transfer window.

Sunderland are particularly keen thanks to sporting director Florent Ghisolfi. He already made enquiries last summer. Given those talks, Sunderland could have a slight advantage over Brentford. They’re also keen on the Mexican striker.

There is also competition from Fenerbahçe, while new leads are expected to develop at some point as well. Milan, for their part, want to recoup the €30m they paid Feyenoord a year ago. Whether Sunderland or Brentford are willing to pay that, remains to be seen.
