Nottingham Forest are closing in on signing Racing Santander’s Gustavo Puerta, after the surprising developments in the last few hours.
Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report on the 23-year-old’s transfer to Nottingham Forest.
Why Nottingham Forest move surprising
On August 4th, we relayed news of the Reds making contact to sign the midfielder. Their owner, Evangelos Marinakis, also owns Olympiacos.
Later that month, Sport Witness covered a report explaining that Marinakis wants to sign Gustavo Puerta for the Greek club.
At the weekend, the owner accepted defeat, after confirming the player is on his way to Benfica.
He said: “We paid Puerta’s €16m (£13.8m) clause and he isn’t coming, he wants to go to Benfica. What more can be done?
“What everyone in Greece needs to understand is that, although Olympiacos are a big club, Greek football is in the lower positions of the European rankings. For very good young players, playing in Greece isn’t their first choice.”
Therefore, the latest update from Pipe Sierra is surprising. He reports Marinakis and his group have made the Colombia international their ‘top priority’.
They have offered the Racing Santander player a contract to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent transfer. The Reds will immediately send Puerta on loan to the Greek club.
Nottingham Forest move edging closer
Another journalist, Pablo Oliveira, also took to X to back up Gustavo Puerta joining Oliver Glasner’s side and then going out on loan to Greece.
Oliveira states the player will arrive in Nottingham via a chartered flight at 12:30pm on Monday, without specifying whether it’s local time.
The South American will carry out the medical tests and then sign the contract with the Premier League side. He will then join Olympiacos on loan, and the move will allow him to play in the Europa League.
