AS Roma’s Matias Soule has been linked with several English clubs but Newcastle United could have a shot at a decisive move.

The Argentine had an injury-troubled 2025/26 campaign for the Giallorossi. This derailed his progress in the second half of the campaign, causing doubts over his future in the Italian capital.

Earlier this summer, Sport Witness covered interest from Sunderland, who made initial contact for the attacker. It was clear his agent was trying to find a new club, with Roma open to a sale.

Now, Newcastle United have emerged as a possible suitor for Soule.

Monday’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport reports that while Gian Piero Gasperini played down Soule’s exit, the opposite is happening in the background. The club is focused on finding a new club for the Argentine. His exit can end up being key for Roma, as it can allow them to make two new signings.

The newspaper note that Soule will get limited game time at Roma. His agent is aware of that and is hunting for last minute transfer opportunities.

On Saturday, this attracted interest from Fulham but on Sunday, Newcastle United’s interest also emerged.

The report believes the Magpies could make an offer in the ‘next few hours’ and Roma aren’t against the sale.

Corriere dello Sport report that despite their interest, Fulham are yet to make any in-roads over a deal. This should come as a chance for Newcastle United, with Roma already certain of possible replacements.

Our take: Several options floated

Throughout the summer, Roma have remained open to Soule’s sale. This has led to initial contact being made with several English clubs and his agent was key to this.

With the transfer window closing soon, those attempts are clearly intensifying. This is why Newcastle United’s interested has been reported, as brief contact was probably made.

This doesn’t guarantee a formal offer will be made. It is likely though that other clubs step forward for the 23-year-old late in the window.
