Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered claims from Italy that Newcastle United are in the picture to sign Sevilla’s Joaquín Martínez Gauna, also known as Oso. 

The Spanish media have joined to back up Newcastle United’s interest when covering the latest on the left-back.

His future remains uncertain and the La Liga may have no choice but to sell him this summer.

Sevilla initially signed the left-back for their reserve team from Málaga in 2022. He made his way into their first team in 2023 and played 24 matches last season.

Oso’s contract expires in 2027 and hasn’t signed an extension so far. This has seen him attract interest from a few clubs, including Newcastle United and others

On Thursday, we relayed news of Nottingham Forest entering the race at the last-minute for the player valued at €10m.

Newcastle United make approach 

ABC Sevilla, a newspaper local to the Andalusian club, claims Oso’s contract forces Sevilla to focus on the market.

The Spaniard has a €20m clause and has put the renewal on hold. Therefore, the La Liga side almost have an obligation to cash in on him, to avoid losing him for free next year.

Sevilla also need to raise funds to improve their finances. All these factors could force them to sell Oso this summer.

He isn’t short of options, as several clubs have made contact. After Fiorentina, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have joined the race in the last few hours.

The Premier League duo made approaches to find out whether the 22-year-old is willing to join them and the terms needed to secure his services like the transfer fee and his salary demand.

Reasonable deal for Magpies

With a contract expiring in 2027, Transfermarkt now value him at €10m. There’s been a substantial raise as his value was €200k in June 2025.

ABC Sevilla don’t mention the price and it’s unlikely to be high. Yesterday’s claim said it was around €10m, which is half of his release clause.

If it’s €10m, it will be reasonable for Newcastle United and even the €20m clause would be affordable for the Magpies.
