FC Nürnberg’s potential legal case against Championship club Southampton could be solved, if they sell Caspar Jander before the end of the transfer window.
BILD explain the situation today and how Nürnberg continue to explore their options over Spy Gate last season.
The newspaper explains that Southampton’s Spy Gate drama led to anger at Nürnberg earlier this year. They were set to benefit from a €1m transfer payment for Jander had Southampton been promoted to the Premier League.
Nürnberg sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou subsequently stated that the German side would “examine legal options.” He was asked about this again on Friday by BILD.
“We are continuing to have our potential claims thoroughly reviewed by our lawyers,” he said, about action against the Championship club. “Since the statute of limitations has not yet expired, we are under no immediate time pressure.”
Legal route will be further studied
The plan is to explore the matter more intensively once the transfer window closes. The German side could be the only side exploring legal options.
Up to this point, not a single lawsuit has yet been filed against Southampton. That includes their own players, who had threatened to sue for bonus payments that they’d missed out on.
One potential solution for Southampton is selling Jander before the end of the window. The midfielder remains on the radar of several top German clubs this summer. BILD specifically name VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig.
Sale could help Championship club
In that scenario, Nürnberg would benefit from the transfer fee thanks to an agreed sell-on clause included in the original deal taking the 23-year-old to Southampton.
The idea here is that Nürnberg would benefit from the transfer and that, in turn, would stop them from further pursuing a legal challenge against Southampton.
Of course, conversely, they may think that they want both sums and continue with legal action anyway.
For now, the latter is still being explored by their lawyers. Southampton selling Jander could put an end to that idea.
