Everton have reactivated their interest in Parma Mandela Keita, with ongoing contacts for the midfielder.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Everton – and Roma – are holding talks with the Italian side over the 24-year-old.
He states that the Mandela Keita option has been reactivated by both clubs ahead of this evening’s 11pm deadline.
Everton interest
Mandela Keita looked destined to head to Merseyside earlier this summer when Everton showed interest in him.
A report at the end of June explained that contacts were already underway with Parma about the midfielder. They were then quoted €25m for a deal, before later asking for a payment plan to help push the move through.
Since then, there have been no reports about their interest. But with Tim Iroegbunam set to move to Hull City on deadline day, it seems Everton have returned to the market. Iroegbunam’s departure will not only leave space in the squad that needs to be filled but provide funds with which to do it.
And it appears the Toffees have returned for a player they have already scouted earlier in the window.
Roma competition
They face competition from Roma, though. They, of course, are also owned by the Friedkin Group, which could prove to be problematic.
The Italian side are on the hunt for a replacement for Manu Kone, who could join Chelsea at some point today.
That deal will mean Gian Piero Gasperini’s side need a replacement and will have funds to secure him too. If they enter the bidding for Mandela Keita, it would be surprising if they did not win out. The lure of Champions League football often proves too strong for most players.
Everton can counter that with a Premier League offer. But they would prefer not be battling another team – particularly one also owned by their owners – if they can avoid it.
