Galatasaray defender Wilfried Singo turned down an approach from Newcastle United this summer.
Journalist and Galatasaray reporter Ali Naci Küçük has shared details of Newcastle’s bid for the 25-year-old, and his decision to reject it.
“Newcastle made an official offer of €40m for Singo,” Haber Sari Kirmizi report him saying on the Dici Futbol YouTube channel.
“Singo responded, ‘No, I don’t want to leave. I want to prove myself and move for a much higher fee later.'”
Newcastle United bid
Sport Witness covered a report from Türkiye last month detailing a €40m bid from Newcastle for the Ivory Coast full-back.
That explained that Galatasaray could have been talked into a deal for the former Monaco man, who arrived in a €30.77m deal from the Ligue 1 side last summer.
The idea, at the time, was that they could sell Wilfried Singo for a big profit. They would the use that money to try and bring Sacha Boey back to the club from Bayern Munich. It seems that idea, though, did not develop into anything.
And Singo put an end to it definitively when he rejected the chance to join Newcastle anyway. He has a different career plan in mind at this moment in time.
Magpies already covered
Whether the Magpies are overly concerned by that remains to be seen. They have already signed Amar Dedic as their new right-back this summer. He’s making a very positive early impression under Matthias Jaissle.
And they have Tino Livramento to return from injury at some point as well. So, they are well covered when it comes to right-backs moving forwards.
There is every chance Wilfried Singo was being targeted to cover central defence too – he can play there and left-back – but with a deal now definitively off the table, it doesn’t really matter.
He wasn’t interested and it seems Newcastle never pushed it beyond that initial offer.
