Rodri has found himself in hot water just a few weeks after leaving Manchester City, after being caught on tv making controversial comments about Valencia.
Cadena SER cover the situation today as the former Manchester City star has been moved enough by criticism to apologise for the incident.
Rodri wanted to ‘nip in the bud’ the controversy that had developed following Barcelona’s win over Valencia.
Captain contacted
He contacted Valencia captain José Luis Gayà to apologise for statements that were captured by Movistar + cameras during their broadcast of the game.
During the match, Rodri had a conversation with Pau Cubarsí in which he referred to the Valencia players using expressions such as “they are very weak” or “they are very bad, they are very bad”.
This was all caught by the cameras and covered after the game at great length. It reportedly ‘generated discomfort in the Valencia club environment.’
The Manchester City favourite was keen to ensure that his words weren’t interpreted as disrespectful, though. Once he saw the impact the images had had, he decided to contact the Valencia captain. It is also possible that he will speak publicly on the matter.
Relationship key
Fortunately for Rodri he knows Gaya well from the Spanish national team and shared call ups in recent years. He conveyed his apologies and asked for them to extended to the Valencia dressing room.
His intention is to shut down the controversy before it gains traction and becomes a bigger thing than it needs to be. Whether it works, remains to be seen.
The midfielder could probably do without being in the headlines. He spent the summer surrounded in the the drama around his move already.
Instead, he’s having to put out fires before they spread, following some misplaced comments on the bench.
