West Ham United and Nuno Espírito Santo’s decision has now left Edson Álvarez in limbo.
That’s according to Marca in Mexico, who cover the midfielder’s difficult situation at West Ham.
West Ham’s high price blocked exit
In the summer, the Mexico international returned to the English club, after a loan spell at Fenerbahçe. The Hammers had dropped to the Championship, and he hasn’t been keen on playing in the lower division.
Real Sociedad, Olympiacos and Mexican side Club América were among the options for the former Ajax man in the last window.
On August 25th, new Olympiacos signing Armando González’s father confirmed the Greek club were keen on signing him, but the move didn’t go through. Last week, Sport Witness relayed news Edson Álvarez had closed the door on the possibility of returning to Mexico.
His desire has been to continue in Europe. The summer move never took shape because of West Ham’s high price, although there’s no figure attached.
Nuno not considering Mexican at West Ham
Edson Álvarez played 75 minutes in the Hammers’ EFL Cup win over Portsmouth.
Nuno Espírito Santo, however, left him out of the squad for all six Championship matches. There’s no official explanation for his absence, nor is he out of action with an injury.
Marca states: ‘He’s simply not there. And in English football, when a player of his calibre disappears from the squad without a clear medical explanation, the message is usually the same: the club no longer sees him as a useful asset.’
Their title says: ‘Edson Álvarez erased from everywhere at West Ham: Another sign of disrespect against the Mexican’.
They describe him as an elite midfielder. Nuno leaving him out of the squad impacts his image and leaves him in limbo.
The 28-year-old’s omission is a ‘passive way’ of punishing him for refusing to leave or pressuring him for a transfer. If his situation doesn’t change in the coming weeks, he will certainly push for a move in January.
