Last season, Nicolas Raskin played 48 matches for Rangers and his displays at Ibrox helped him make his debut for Belgium in March.
Russell Martin arrived at Rangers in June and didn’t consider Raskin important for key fixtures. The manager left him out of the squad in the league draw against Celtic and on the bench in the Champions League qualifying defeat to Club Brugge.
The midfielder has made just four league starts so far this season, but his situation at Rangers didn’t impact his place in the national team.
Raskin played the full 90 minutes in both Belgium’s draw against North Macedonia last week and their 4-2 win over Wales on Monday. His performance has impressed Het Nieuwsblad.
They rated him 8/10, which is the second highest, after the 9/10 given to Manchester City’s Jérémy Doku.
The newspaper say it’s ‘incomprehensible’ that Russell Martin didn’t make the best use of Raskin at Ibrox. Earlier this month, Rangers showed the exit door to the manager and are yet to appoint his successor.
On Raskin’s display against Wales, Het Nieuwsblad state: ‘Very determined and assertive in duels, but also a good follow-through on the ball. The regulator in midfield. That way, you don’t need Witsel [right away].’
