Emerson Palmieri joined Marseille from West Ham late in the summer transfer window.
The left-back has already made four appearances in Ligue 1. He’s already established himself as an important player under Roberto De Zerbi.
The 31-year-old has now spoken to Calciomercato about his transfer to Marseille.
He made it clear that West Ham created issues ahead of the move. This played a part in making it a stressful period for the player.
Emerson told the outlet, reflecting on Marseille’s troubles in striking an agreement: “Two weeks earlier, I had already given De Zerbi the OK. The clubs needed to reach an agreement.
“I was a little nervous because I was afraid they wouldn’t reach an agreement, but the manager and Benatia wanted me so much that they waited until the very end.”
Speaking further on his fears during negotiations, Emerson said: “I had this fear, because I’m a man of my word, but it wasn’t just up to me. Before the transfer, I spent 50 days training alone.
“West Ham wouldn’t lower their demands, but I kept calm because I knew Marseille were there.”
The Italy international revealed that support from his brother proved important at this point.
“My brother’s presence. He came from Brazil to London to be with me. And when Marseille came forward, he immediately advised me to accept because it would be a unique experience.”
West Ham were keen to get rid of Emerson, but not in any deal.
Emerson was a key player for West Ham in his last two seasons. He played a total of 67 Premier League games during this period. The Azzurri defender also grabbed three goals and four assists.
He is now playing in the Champions League for Marseille, with the Hammers 19th in the Premier League.
