Liverpool are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck.
That’s according to Bild, who report Liverpool want the centre-back and ‘join the poker’ to sign him.
The defender has a contract lasting until 2027, and his long-term future needs to be sorted out.
Liverpool summer signing Giovanni Leoni suffered a serious injury in September and is set for a long spell on the sidelines. Recent claims in the UK have reported on the Reds’ interest in Schlotterbeck ahead of the winter market.
Bild relay that and then give their own update on Liverpool’s interest and the 25-year-old’s situation at BVB.
It’s claimed the Reds see the Germany international as a long-term successor to 34-year-old Virgil van Dijk.
Although they are said to be looking at him for January, Bild report the Bundesliga club are ruling out this possibility. Borussia Dortmund’s desire is to extend his contract until 2030, but their chances ‘continue to dwindle’.
Schlotterbeck recently indicated he’s in no rush to sign an extension. Borussia Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken has responded to that.
“It is his absolute right to plan his future carefully. We respect that. And I believe that salary is not the most important factor, but rather the perspective, trust, and conviction,” he said.
“We won’t rush into things. But of course, we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely; everyone is aware of that.”
BVB face Bayern Munich in the league on Saturday. It’s claimed a defeat in this match ‘would likely confirm the defender’s concern’ that he can’t win the title with his club.
This and his contract situation would encourage Liverpool to try and sign him, either in January or next summer.
