Leeds United‘s Sebastiaan Bornauw says he pushed hard to leave the Premier League side for Hamburg SV in the summer window.
The Belgian came up through the ranks of Anderlecht’s academy and spent only a year with their first team. In 2019, he moved to Germany when 1. FC Köln and two years later, the defender left them for VfL Wolfsburg.
Bornauw had a four-year spell at Wolfsburg and left them for Leeds United last summer.
He waited until last December to make his Premier League debut and finished the season with 423 minutes from 12 league matches. The centre-back also made five appearances in the cup competitions.
Leeds United man excited about Bundesliga return
Last month, he returned to Germany when Hamburg signed him on a season-long loan deal. After completing the move, the Leeds United owned player said he didn’t think twice about leaving the Whites for Hamburg.
Tuesday’s print edition of Bildcovers Sebastiaan Bornauw’s comments on what he did to leave Daniel Farke’s side.
The Bundesliga side arranged a supporters’ club meet at the Volksparkstadion and he was the guest. While interacting there, he explains how he secured his move to Hamburg.
“I fought hard at Leeds United to come to Hamburg. I really wanted to play for HSV. There’s an abundance of tradition here, and I like that,” he said.
He knows about the city during his spell with VfL Wolfsburg.
“When I played in Wolfsburg, there wasn’t that much to do there. And Hamburg wasn’t that far away. So, I know the city quite well, and that makes it easier to settle in here,” Bornauw explained.

Leeds United player’s slow start to season
Sebastiaan Bornauw made his Hamburg debut in the DFB-Pokal win over SC Verl and then 
started in the first two league matches.
The Leeds United man missed the last two matches because of a muscular problem.
The expectation is for him to regain full fitness and return to the pitch when Hamburg face TSG Hoffenheim on October 10th, after the international break.
Despite the injury, the early signs are positive, meaning he made the right decision to leave the Whites.
