Sebastiaan Bornauw has admitted he was convinced to leave Leeds United for HSV Hamburg “from the very first moment”.
Hamburger Abendblatt report comments from the 27-year-old today after he finalised his move to the German club.
The centre-back completed a loan move to the Bundesliga side on Wednesday, bringing an end to a disappointing year at Elland Road.
The defender had moved to the club last summer but managed just 17 appearances totalling 771 minutes under Daniel Farke last season.
Reports have linked him with a move away since January. That has now happened, with HSV wrapping up a deal that can be made permanent next summer should they avoid relegation once again.
Bornauw is keen to get started and admits he didn’t think twice about leaving Leeds to return to the Bundesliga.
“I was convinced from the very first moment during the talks with HSV,” he said.
“I could feel the trust the decision-makers placed in me, I love the emotion that surrounds a club with such a rich tradition as HSV. It gives me a lot of energy as a player. The fans can look forward to the fact that I will always give my all for my team.”
Vuskovic replacement
HSV are hoping that Sebastiaan Bornauw can make an immediate impact, having brought him in to replace youngster Luka Vuskovic.
He was on loan at the German club from Tottenham last season. That deal proved to be a highly effective one for both parties as he established himself as a key player. Indeed, he became the breakout star of the Bundesliga season.
But a permanent stay, or even an extended one, was not on the cards. He instead returned to Tottenham and has since joined Brighton. Now HSV need Bornauw to step into the gap and are confident he can do so.
“Sebastiaan is already familiar with the Bundesliga from his previous stints and brings a special work ethic with him,” said Board Member for Sport Kathleen Krüger.
“He is someone who embodies discipline and professionalism on a daily basis while also standing for team spirit, strength of character, and communication.
“His personality makes him a huge asset to any dressing room, and he fits perfectly into our squad dynamic. He is expected to take on a leading role in the team and help his teammates improve further through his coaching ability.”
Sporting ability and leadership
Sporting Director Claus Costa, meanwhile, is banking on both sporting ability and leadership qualities from the former Leeds man.
“Sebastiaan fits our profile perfectly. He brings the physical presence, strength in duels, and aerial ability that we want for our defence,” he added.
“Furthermore, he is characterised by a mature and consistent style of play. Sebastiaan is a player with strong leadership qualities who takes responsibility both on and off the pitch and is capable of organising a defence.
“We are delighted that Sebastiaan has chosen to join us on our journey. We are convinced that his quality and experience will see him play a key role. And we look forward to starting the new Bundesliga season with him.”
