Burnley player overrated and under pressure – “People get so excited without knowing him”

Burnley defender Oliver Sonne has found himself under a bit of pressure in Peru, with his place in the national team now being questioned.

The 25-year-old is part of the country’s plans under manager Mano Menezes, but former Peru goalkeeper Leao Butrón isn’t convinced by the excitement around him.

Relayed by Diario Ahora, Butrón compared the Burnley man with Alianza Lima right-back Marco Huamán. And he made his preference pretty clear.

“The thing is that he isn’t better than Huamán. I also think he isn’t better than Huamán, but people get so excited without knowing him. I wish Sonne all the best, but if they put Huamán in, there’s no problem,” Butrón said.

Peru are beginning a new cycle after missing out on the 2026 World Cup. Menezes now has an eye on building towards 2030.

Sonne has been part of the national team picture for a while. His Danish background also meant there was plenty of attention when he first committed to Peru.

That excitement clearly hasn’t convinced everyone. A Presión host Mr. Peet agreed with Butrón that, from a footballing point of view, Sonne isn’t better than Huamán.

There is one difference he believes works in the Burnley player’s favour: Mr. Peet argued Sonne has a physical advantage over his competition.

The discussion comes as Peru prepare for four friendlies against the United States, Mexico, Canada and Colombia. Those games should give Menezes plenty of room to experiment as he starts shaping his team for the next cycle.

Of course the Burnley player has the physical qualities which some in Peru believe give him an advantage. But Butrón clearly isn’t buying the idea that this automatically makes him a better option.

He believes Huamán could come into the side without Peru losing anything at right-back. Sonne now has a chance to make his own case on the pitch.
