Manchester United picked up a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in their third Champions League game on Wednesday. The Italian media has now looked at performances from the Red Devils’ players.

Michael Carrick’s side came into the tie carrying a raft of injury problems. Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko, Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martinez were all missing, leaving the side short of options.

A the same time, Como were also without key attackers in Moise Kean and Assane Diao.

Despite that, Cesc Fabregas’ side ran riot, riding on a Nico Paz brace and goal each from Jacobo Ramon and Tasos Douvikas.

Bruno Fernandes slammed

Gazzetta
It’s not pretty for Manchester United from Gazzetta dello Sport, but it probably should have been worse

Thursday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport covers player performances from Manchester United, with Matthijs De Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo picking up the lowest ratings at 4.5/10.

Bruno Fernandes earned a 5/10, which is the second lowest. Gazzetta dello Sport add a little colour to it all.

They describe the Portuguese midfielder as someone who played at a ‘B level’ dimension on his return to Italy. The newspaper note that his performance had ‘technical errors, lost duels’ and no inspiration at all.

Gazzetta hand him a rating of 4/10, saying that he was often wandering aimlessly.

Mateus Cunha is also handed criticism, with the newspaper saying he was torn apart by Lucas Da Cunha and Nico Paz. The pink daily aren’t too kind on Mbeumo either, saying that he didn’t have a single good idea on the pitch.

They indicate Harry Maguire as the worst player, rating him at 4/10, writing that he ‘made a mess of things’.

Our take: Things could’ve been worse

Manchester United offered nothing in the game, even if they scored a stoppage time consolation. The ratings from the Italian dailies could’ve been much worse and the scoreline could’ve been more staggering too.

Fabregas himself has revealed that he asked his players to take it easy after 4-0, which will somewhat sting.

Carrick can easily justify that the squad has been troubled by injuries but the team clearly has no identity. That led to the performance being very flat, as Como thrived even without injured players of their own.
