Niclas Füllkrug is in disbelief at his impressive start to the season with Werder Bremen, after joining them on loan from West Ham United in the summer window.
The striker spent four years with the Bundesliga side and left them for Borussia Dortmund in 2023. He starred in his debut season for BVB, managing 15 goals and 10 assists from 43 matches.
This convinced West Ham to secure his services in August 2024, but the player failed to replicate his Dortmund form for the London club.
The Germany international suffered two different injuries in his debut season. This limited him to three goals and two assists from 877 minutes from 20 matches.
Last season, Füllkrug failed to score or assist from nine matches and the Hammers sent him on loan to AC Milan in January. He finished the temporary spell with a goal from 20 matches.
West Ham man’s summer decision paid off
In the summer window, the Championship side again sent him on loan, this time to Werder Bremen.
This has worked out well so far as Niclas Füllkrug has four goals from five matches and scored a goal in each of the last three matches. He has equalled his last two season goal tally in five matches this season.
At the weekend, the Bundesliga side came from 2-0 down to beat FC Augsburg 3-2. The West Ham United owned player scored the equaliser in the 86th minute before Mitchell Weiser netted the late winner.
The 33-year-old talked about his recent form when discussing Werder Bremen’s comeback and Monday’s print edition of Bild has relayed his comments.
“Moments like today [last Saturday] are special. When 42,000 people believe in something, the probability of achieving it is higher than if only eleven do. And that was the case again,” he said.
“I went to the stands and shouted: How is this possible? How is it that I put on this jersey and score again, just like I want?”
Good things likely to follow for West Ham man
Earlier this month, Niclas Füllkrug talked about his big goal of returning to the Germany squad for the first time since September 2025.
New manager Jürgen Klopp hasn’t included him in the squad for the current international break.
Should he continue his good run, it won’t be long before the Germany manager considers him for November’s fixtures.
Werder Bremen managing director Clemens Fritz backs him to return to the national team.
“It can’t be ruled out. I believe he’s capable of it,” Fritz explained.
This can also result in a permanent transfer away from West Ham United, as early as January or next summer.
