West Ham United flop Niclas Füllkrug now has his eyes set on a potential return to the German national team, with Jurgen Klopp set to name his squad for the next international break.
Frankfurter Neue Presse cover the 33-year-old today and how he could be in Klopp’s eye-line after making a return to Werder Bremen.
The striker returned to his former club from West Ham this summer and has already made a flying start, with goals in the Bundesliga and DfB Pokal.
He wants to rediscover his old form on the banks of the Weser. And is already feeling that emotion fuelling a potential comeback.
“I hadn’t realized just how much I’d missed it,” he admitted recently.
“But when I stepped out onto the pitch before the warm-up, I definitely got goosebumps a few times. It was hard to keep my emotions in check at that moment.”
Big plans for forward
He made it clear earlier this summer, when he first returned from West Ham, what he hopes to achieve with the move.
“I didn’t come to Werder just to let my career wind down,” he insisted.
“I’m not really sacrificing anything. I’m simply being paid in a different currency: emotion and passion. No other club could have offered me what I hopefully get here.”
Coach Daniel Thioune, meanwhile, made it clear that he wants to make the striker attractive to other people. That was seen as a thinly veiled call out to Germany manager Jurgen Klopp.
“My idea is to get the player back into the best possible shape so that he might become interesting to other people again in the future,” he said.
Germany return?
Füllkrug played his last game for Germany in June 2025. He has not been called up since then. But it is a new dawn under Klopp’s reign, and everyone will be given their chance to stake a claim.
Füllkrug doesn’t want to speak about that too much. But he is a big fan of the Germany coach, nonetheless.
“I don’t want to talk about that at all. I want to perform well here at Werder first, and then we’ll see what happens,” he concluded.
“He (Klopp) is a huge personality with immense charisma. Together with Rudi Völler as sporting director, a lot of positive change can be achieved for German football once again.
“And I am convinced that it is a fantastic opportunity for any player to play for the national team, to be coached by Jürgen Klopp, and to gain experience under him.”
