An irritation in the left knee is what is currently keeping Leon Goretzka from being available at Aston Villa.

BILD report that the midfielder is suffering from an irritation in his left knee. The joint has been giving him minor trouble recently as a result of increased physical strain. The current aim at the club is to prevent the issue from worsening.

Goretzka’s absence has caused some concern at Villa Park following his arrival this summer. Unai Emery has since confirmed that he is not yet fit to play and may not be for a while.

Old injury raises its head

While this has raised eyebrows, BILD say it is due to an irritation in the joint in his left knee. And his absence is a preventative measure from the club.

They report that his left knee has caused him problems in the past. Indeed, in the summer of 2022 he even had to undergo surgery to have loose joint bodies removed via arthroscopy.

Now the issue is raising is ugly head again. He’s already missed two games for the Villans after signing for Aston Villa two weeks ago. He subsequently wrote on Instagram about his body letting him down.

“First of all, thank you for the incredible welcome,” he wrote.

“After my first few days at this club, the feeling that I am in exactly the right place has grown stronger by the day. Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload following my time without match practice.”

International break to get fit

Aston Villa

That mysterious post had caused concern, but BILD insist that the Champions League winner is mostly fine. It is certainly not a major injury keeping him out.

Instead, he intends to use the coming days and the international break to make a full recovery. It seem Aston Villa are certainly playing it safe for the time being.

It means Goretzka will miss Aston Villa’s next four games, starting with Club Brugge this week. BILD say the earliest he is likely to make his debut is October 10th against Brentford.
