Liverpool sold Curtis Jones to Inter Milan in the summer but it appears they attempted a possible swap deal.
The Englishman had been close to a move to the Italian champions in January too. He had rejected a contract renewal with the Reds and he finally got his wish late in the summer.
Jones hasn’t exactly started his life in Italy well, though. He was at fault for a goal against Real Madrid and has not impressed in Serie A, having struggled against AS Roma at the weekend.
Now, some background around his Liverpool exit has emerged.
Reds wanted swap deal
Today, Tuttomercatoweb report about the situation of Aleksandar Stankovic at Inter Milan. He impressed at Club Brugge last season, starring for them in the Champions League. Inter made a decision to exercise their buyback clause but he has been on the peripheries of the squad under Cristian Chivu.
The outlet reveal that Liverpool ‘attempted to sign’ him in the summer, after he returned to the Nerazzurri. They tried to assess the idea of landing him in Inter’s move for Jones.
Brentford also made a formal offer, putting forward €40m for a permanent deal. These two attempts were rejected as a loan would’ve been more suitable for Inter.
TMW note that Stankovic is ‘in love’ with Inter. He has no immediate intentions of leaving. But if he doesn’t get game time until the January transfer window, things could evolve and a temporary departure could be on the cards.

Our take: Situation worth monitoring
Stankovic is a Champions League-proven player who should be playing more often. All signs point at the fact that he will not be a regular at Inter and if anything, he should’ve been loaned out in the summer.
This is something Liverpool should keep monitoring. If Stankovic gets loaned out, his value will be retained and Inter would like that. But he is a player who is destined for big things and a future move to England can’t be ruled out.
If things go well, it won’t be a surprise if the Reds’ interest resurfaces.
