Chelsea loanee Jesse Derry is now said to be frustrated with his lack of opportunities at Sporting, adding another problem to a loan spell that hasn’t gone as planned so far.
The 19-year-old moved to Portugal with the clear aim of getting regular senior football. Instead, he remains stuck on just 26 competitive minutes.
Portuguese outlet Leonino now reports Derry himself is disappointed with how little Rui Borges has used him.
Of course that’s frustrating after a promising pre-season. The Chelsea youngster impressed during the summer, including scoring a superb goal against Monaco on his first appearance at the Estádio José Alvalade.
At that stage, things looked pretty encouraging. But the competitive season has been very different.
Derry expected much more
Derry has appeared in three league matches, coming from the bench every time. According to Leonino, that’s well short of what the England U19 international expected when he agreed to spend the season at Sporting.
His plan was to use the move to Portugal to gain experience at a high level and establish himself in senior football.
That’s exactly why Chelsea agreed to the loan in the first place. The Blues had already given Derry his first taste of senior football last season and then renewed his contract until 2032 before sending him to Lisbon. So far, the next stage of that development hasn’t really happened.
Importantly, though, Leonino don’t suggest Derry wants out. They say he’s naturally frustrated but remains determined to fight for opportunities and prove himself at Sporting.

January question isn’t going away
That fits into a situation we’ve been following closely. Last week, reports in Portugal explained that Sporting have no intention of ending the loan early despite talk in England about Derry potentially returning to Chelsea in January.
Sporting instead have a development plan for him. He’s been doing individual strength work while also improving his defensive game and movement without the ball.
The problem remains getting on the pitch. Sporting are playing well and Derry has several players ahead of him in the attacking hierarchy. That has left him waiting for opportunities despite the whole point of the loan being to provide them.
There’s still plenty of time for that to change, and Derry clearly hasn’t given up on making the move work. His own frustration does add something new to the picture, though.
Chelsea wanted minutes, Derry expected minutes and Sporting still believe they can develop him. If those minutes don’t start arriving, the conversation around January is only likely to get louder.
