Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry’s lack of minutes at Sporting is already prompting talk in England about cutting his loan short in January.
As we covered just yesterday in Chelsea Loan Watch, the 19-year-old has managed only 26 competitive minutes since arriving in Portugal. Those have been spread across three substitute appearances.
That is hardly what Chelsea will have wanted when they sent one of their promising youngsters abroad to make the step into regular senior football. The situation has generated calls in England for Derry to return to Stamford Bridge when the January window opens.
Sporting, though, are strongly against that idea. Portuguese newspaper A Bola has looked into the situation on Wednesday and says an early return to Chelsea is simply not in Sporting’s plans. “Far from it,” they add.
Sporting have a plan for Derry
Rather than accepting that the loan isn’t working, Sporting believe Jesse Derry needs time to develop into a player capable of meeting the demands of Rui Borges’ team.
There has already been specific work going on behind the scenes. Jesse Derry has followed an individual programme focused on building his strength over recent weeks.
The Chelsea loanee is also working on his defensive behaviour and his game without the ball. Sporting want to give him the tools required to cope better with Portuguese football and, more specifically, Borges’ system.
That helps explain why his introduction has been slower than Chelsea supporters may have hoped.
Competition isn’t getting any easier
Jesse Derry still has a significant problem when it comes to actually getting on the pitch. Flávio Gonçalves has established himself on the left and started the season strongly. A Bola also points to Nestory Irankunda, signed from Watford, as another player competing for minutes out wide.
As we explained in our Chelsea Loan Watch this week, Sporting’s strong start hasn’t exactly encouraged Borges to experiment either. So Derry therefore remains towards the back of the queue for now.
The important difference is that Sporting don’t appear to view that as a reason to abandon the loan. Also, judging by the tone of the Portuguese reports, it’s also unclear whether Chelsea have a January recall clause in the agreement. It’s entirely possible the Blues don’t have that option.
For the time being, though, Sporting have no intention of sending Derry back early just because his first couple of months haven’t brought the minutes everyone hoped for.
