Sunderland are refusing to give up on the signing of Geny Catamo from Sporting Club de Portugal after failing to sign him in the summer.

Catamo ‘remains in the sights’ of the Black Cats. Sunderland are ‘not letting up’ on Sporting’s number 10.

The Premier League club continue to closely monitor the winger’s performances this summer.

What Sunderland are doing

Sunderland were present for Sporting’s recent 3-1 victory over Galatasaray. A representative from the Stadium of Light was at the Champions League clash at the José Alvalade Stadium.

Saturday’s print edition of Record states they had a ‘specific focus on the winger’ following Sunderland’s attempts to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Sunderland could revive their interest in the January transfer window. The Mozambican has already impressed in the reports that they have.

But he added to his reputation with a ‘spectacular’ goal in the win over Galatasaray. Indeed, his goal was the one which sparked the Portuguese side’s comeback in the game.

The player is in peak formas Sport Witness explained earlier this week – and attracting market attention and Sunderland intend to renew their pursuit next year.

They tried hard to get a deal in the summer, but Sporting blocked them repeatedly, demanding a guaranteed €40m that Sunderland never offered. The highest they were willing to go was e willing to go was €35m plus €5m in bonuses.

It remains to be seen what they’re willing to offer in January. More performances like this one in front of the scouts may convince them to cough up the extra €5m.

There could be competition from Cesc Fabregas’ Como. Catamo was also on their list in the summer, but they only made preliminary enquiries. There is also potential interest from Tottenham and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Sunderland, though, are the ones doing the scouting and putting themselves at the front of the queue at this moment in time.
