History

Formed in 1879 by schoolteacher James Allan, Sunderland AFC is a historic English club with six top-flight league titles (last in 1936) and two FA Cups (1937, 1973). Known as the Black Cats, they moved from Roker Park to the 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light in 1997. The club is known for fierce Tyne–Wear derbies against Newcastle United.
