Richarlison’s lawyer has flown to London to try to sort out his Tottenham exit, and there’s an interesting Everton angle that could develop.
O Globo bring the latest update on Friday afternoon, with the Brazilian transfer deadline now just hours away.
Vasco da Gama are still trying to get Richarlison. Yet the striker has another idea which may tell us more about what he really wants.
He would prefer to leave Tottenham as a free agent and then have complete freedom to choose his next club in January. And given how close he came to returning to Everton recently, that immediately caught our attention.
Lawyer arrives in London
O Globo say Richarlison’s lawyer travelled to London on Friday morning specifically to try to unblock his departure from Tottenham. Termination remains the player’s first choice though.
Vasco, meanwhile, are stuck somewhere in the middle. They’re trying to convince Spurs to accept a transfer and avoid a potential legal dispute. They also need Richarlison to accept actually being sold.
The Brazilian club have come up with various ways to make that second option more attractive. O Globo say those include a bigger signing-on fee and giving Richarlison a percentage of a future sale.
Crucially, any agreement would also give him a route out after the Brazilian season. There’s a reason Vasco are willing to make things complicated. They know Richarlison would prefer to be completely free when January comes around.
Bruno Andrade backed up that part of the story on ESPN Brazil on Friday. He says Richarlison has never wanted to commit himself to a long-term return to Brazil.
The idea of spending three or four months at Vasco only came up recently, once the possibility of terminating his Tottenham contract appeared.
Andrade says the plan would then be to look for another club in Europe or the Middle East in January. In other words, Vasco would be a short stop. Richarlison still appears to have his eyes on what comes afterwards.
Keep an eye on Everton
O Globo don’t mention Everton in their report, and neither does Andrade, but it’s difficult not to wonder about them. Richarlison were very keen on returning to his former club before the deal fell apart.
Now, just days later, he’s resisting a permanent move to Vasco and trying to secure his freedom from Tottenham.
O Globo specifically say that freedom would allow him to “seek a new direction” in January.
Perhaps that’s completely unrelated to Everton. Still, if Richarlison wanted to leave Tottenham while keeping the Premier League as an option, becoming a free agent would make plenty of sense.
It would also explain why a Vasco move lasting only until December has appealed to him so much. But there isn’t much time left for that part of the plan. Vasco need everything sorted before Brazil’s deadline so they can register Richarlison for 2026.
If that doesn’t happen, O Globo say he could still sort out his Tottenham exit afterwards. He’d then have to wait until January before joining anyone else.
That would kill the Vasco move for now. It could also put Richarlison back on the market just as Everton and the rest of the Premier League are allowed to start doing business again.
Nobody is saying that’s his plan. Given what nearly happened recently, though, Everton may want to keep their phone switched on.
