Aston Villa are set for an international break trip to Seville to take on Sevilla in the Antonio Puerta Trophy.
Marca report that they have been able to confirm that Aston Villa will ‘almost certainly’ be the opponent for Sevilla’s game on October 2nd.
The newspaper reports that the agreement is ‘pending the final formalities’ for a definitive agreement. But Sevilla believe that they have secured a high-profile opponent for the 15th edition of the Antonio Puerta trophy.
Aston Villa almost certainly
Aston Villa will almost certainly be the opponents for the game, which is set to take place on Friday, October 2, at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
The event is a major annual occurrence for Sevilla as they pay tribute to Puerta. It was postponed in pre-season while a suitable date was sought. Now the plan is for it to take place during the international break.
That’s something they have done in the past for the 3rd, 6th and 8th editions when matches against Granada, Almeria and Boca Juniors were held during the November international break.
Emery return to Seville
The Spanish side have a three week break to use following their clash with Barcelona on match-day seven. That gap – 23 days in fact – is seen as the ideal time to host a friendly. The game is seen as perfect for Sevilla and Aston Villa to ‘maintain their competitive rhythm’.
It’ll be a busy week for the Sánchez-Pizjuán. They host Spain vs Croatia that week then Unai Emery’s return to his former club.
He, of course, ‘wrote one of the most glorious chapters’ in the club’s history between 2013 and 2016. That period saw them win three consecutive Europa League titles.
He hasn’t returned ot the club since 2021, when he visited with former club Villarreal. Now he’s visiting during the international break with Aston Villa, his latest love.
