Lucasz Fabianski has revealed he’s undertaken a new role at Championship leaders West Ham United after bringing his playing career to an end.

The goalkeeper elected to retire back in July after a career that’s seen him play in Poland and England over 24 years.

Fabianski first moved to England in 2007 when he joined Arsenal in a €4.35m deal. 78 appearances followed for the Gunners over the next seven years.

He then joined Swansea City in 2014 on a free transfer, enjoying four productive years with the Swans and making 150 appearances in all competitions before his move to West Ham. He went on to make 218 appearances for the Hammers over the following years.

That included leaving the club last year just to return to months later for a final stint before retirement. Now, the focus is on what comes next for the 41-year-old goalkeeper. And it appears that’s in the literal sense too as he’s working with west Ham’s youngsters.

“I started working, not full-time, but a bit on a casual basis, as a goalkeepers’ coach at the West Ham academy. It brings me a lot of joy to be back on the pitch,” he told Canal + Sport in an interview this week.

The move into coaching, particularly youngsters, is a smart one for Fabianski. A coach who has 429 appearances at the top level certainly has something to offer the goalkeepers of tomorrow.

That’s before you even consider his international experience. He managed 57 appearances for Poland after making his debut in 2006, aged just 20 years old. That is a vast amount of experience to pass on. It seems he’s now in the process of doing it.

Whether that leads to a full role at West Ham in future, remains to be seen. But he’s started the journey after hanging his boots up at the Championship club this summer.
