Everton may not be completely out of the Mauro Icardi picture after all.
Updates from Italy over the past few days had pointed towards the Toffees moving on. The free agent had been offered to Everton, but there was no sign of David Moyes taking the opportunity further. That looked like the end of it.
The view from Argentina is a little different, though. Two reports there in the past 24 hours continue to keep Everton around Icardi’s future.
Olé go furthest. They say the 33-year-old’s potential move to Lazio is now off, before adding that the “Everton possibility is still alive”.
Everton door apparently isn’t closed
That follows an update from TyC Sports. They explained Icardi remains without a club and continues talks as he tries to decide his future. Everton were again mentioned among the clubs who had shown interest.
TyC don’t say the Toffees have returned with a new proposal or restarted negotiations. Olé don’t provide evidence of that either.
That’s important given what has been reported in Italy. We covered reports saying Everton were out of the picture, alongside another unnamed Premier League club – that might have been Tottenham. Lazio then became a potential destination before that route also collapsed.
So we now have two rather different readings of the Everton situation. The Italian version has Moyes and the Toffees walking away. In Argentina, Everton haven’t quite disappeared yet, and Olé explicitly present them as a current possibility.
There’s nothing yet to show which version is closer to the truth.
Icardi may need to rethink what he wants
TyC also provide more detail on why Lazio didn’t happen. They say playing Champions League football has been a priority for Icardi. That complicated the initial talks with the Italian club.
Lazio later revived their interest, but by then their budget wasn’t sufficient. They ultimately turned towards Andrea Pinamonti, who arrived from Sassuolo.
Other Italian reports have put more emphasis on Gennaro Gattuso’s decision. The manager preferred Pinamonti and wasn’t convinced by bringing Icardi into his squad.
Either way, that particular door now appears closed. The Champions League detail also creates an obvious issue if Everton really are still an option. The Toffees can’t offer Icardi that this season.
Something may have to give. For now, there is no indication Everton have made a new move. Yet the Argentine media clearly aren’t treating this story as finished.
