Anthony Elanga’s latest injury at Newcastle United is ‘shrouded in mystery’, with Sweden manager Graham Potter confirming that he’s talked to doctors about it.

The Sweden boss spoke about the injury today, after he announced his squad for the international break.

The Newcastle forward will not be a part of that squad, as he’s nursing an injury. It already saw him miss the trip to Leeds United this weekend. He was left out of the Magpies squad entirely for that game.

He, according to reports, has picked up an injury in training. But the severity of the issue has remained ‘shrouded in mystery’ since. Either way, it is severe enough to now keep him out of Sweden’s squad for the international break.

“I haven’t spoken to him,” Potter told Fotbollskanalen.

“In my experience, it’s better if that (information) goes from doctor to doctor, because otherwise things can easily get lost along the way.”

“No, it’s too early to say,” he added when asked about how long the Newcastle man will be out of action.

“I was very impressed by how Anthony matured during the World Cup. It’s always disappointing to lose players, but it’s part of the job.”

Concern will be growing

Concern does seem to be growing over Anthony Elanga. Matthias Jaissle has suggested that he’s set to undergo further scans before they decide what the next step is.

Whatever the injury is, it seems Elanga is set for an extended period on the sidelines. That’ll be a major blow for him given the flying start he had enjoyed to the season.

It’ll also be the first potential major absence of his career, having missed just five games with a knock in December last year.

For now, Potter and the rest of us appear to be waiting for the doctors to decide what the injury is and what comes next.
