Everton have been offered the chance to move for Mauro Icardi in recent weeks, but haven’t taken the bait.

The Argentine has been without a club since the start of the summer transfer window. He scored 14 times in the 2025/26 campaign for Galatasaray, showing enough to suggest he can still operate at a good level.

That attracted Everton links, with Sport Witness covering that the Toffees were handed a transfer opportunity. There was no certainty over whether David Moyes had initially advanced discussions or not.

Other clubs were also in the race and clarity is now emerging about the 33-year-old’s future.

What happening with Lazio

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Lazio have returned to the picture for the striker. They pursued a move when the window was open but no progress was made at that point.

Now, they are trying to sign the player again, with talks ongoing with Icardi’s entourage.

Previously, the player hadn’t opened to a Lazio transfer. He is much more keen now, especially if the terms on offer meet his demands. This can lead to a different outcome this time around.

Manager Rino Gattuso is expected to speak to the Lazio management about this. This will be key, as the club will decide to whether make a decisive push or possibly even abandon the idea altogether.

Everton are now categorically out of the picture, a situation which is of their own choosing.

Our take: Toffees right to stay away

Mauro Icardi had a good goalscoring record at Galatasaray but carries significant baggage with him. He would also demand high wages, which doesn’t make sense for Everton to pay right now.

Besides, he has developed several injury problems in recent years and that will likely continue as he ages.
