Liverpool and Manchester United have both suffered miserable starts to the season, and improving their squads during January is a distinct possibility.
Michael Carrick needed a fullback added to his squad during the summer market. Alejandro Balde was repeatedly pushed as it was clear to the media and fans alike that an addition was required in that area.
Luke Shaw picking an injury and missing the Manchester derby underlined the transfer failure. United’s fullbacks didn’t cover themselves with glory on Sunday, however, the loss was very controversial after the Enzo Fernandez offside incident.
A clarification of the mistake has already been made by the Premier League. Whilst that will distract from Manchester United’s fullback weakness, it doesn’t change things.
What’s happening ahead of January
The Red Devils improving the position during January is a distinct possibility. However, if they move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde then Liverpool may be in the way.
Milos Kerkez hasn’t had the impact expected of him at Anfield.
That hasn’t changed much with the arrival of his former manager. Andoni Iraola brought the best out of the Hungary international at Bournemouth, but hasn’t been able to replicate that.
Therefore, both clubs being in for a left back is believable.
The update on Balde and Liverpool
Sport, a Catalan newspaper focusing mainly on Barcelona, reports The Reds are now in the picture for Alejandro Balde.
The 22-year-old has had zero minutes this season. Whilst he’s regularly on the bench, Hansi Flick isn’t calling him from it. Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart are ahead of him for the left back and left wing-back roles.
Liverpool have a good working relationship with Barcelona following the Ronald Araujo deal. Manchester United relations are a little more strained due to the Marcus Rashford saga in the summer 2025 window.
Balde is believed to be worth around €40m. He has a contract lasting until 2028 and is represented by Gestifute.
