Djurgården youngster Bo Hegland has been asked directly about a potential move to Newcastle United.

Hegland is currently one of the rising stars of Norwegian football, with him shining for the Swedish side.

He joined Djurgården from Moss in July last year. Since that point, he’s managed 12 goals and 20 assists in 35 games for them.

He previously managed 15 goals and 10 assists in 57 games for Moss. This season he has 11 goals and 17 assists in 27 games in the Allsvenskan alone.

Newcastle United interest

Those kind of numbers don’t tend to go unnoticed for long. Newcastle, for example, have been watching him for a while.

Sport Witness reported in September that they were watching the 22-year-old closely. Hegland was then asked about the interest directly and openly encouraged it.

It was then explained that a summer move had been rejected, but January could be a very different affair. In the meantime, Barcelona have noticed the youngster as well and are watching his performances closely.

NTB report that Newcastle are continuing to keep an interest in him after their summer efforts. With just four games of the season remaining in Sweden, a transfer could become an issue sooner rather than later. Hegland is more than aware of that interest.

“I’m trying not to think about it too much right now,” he told Bergens Tidende.

“There are four games left in the season; my full focus is on those four matches, and then we can evaluate things later.

“I’m very happy at Djurgården and am in no hurry to move on. I’m really enjoying living in Stockholm and playing for such a great club.”

Shining in Sweden

In the meantime, the praise keeps rolling in. Oskar Månsson, editor-in-chief of Fotboll Sthlm, believes Hegland is perhaps the best player in Sweden.

“Hegland is a sensation—perhaps the best player in the Allsvenskan,” he said.

“From a strong season in Moss to the bench at Djurgården—and now to becoming a major star in the Allsvenskan. No one really knows how it happened—perhaps not even Hegland himself.”

Even Hegland is surprised. He insists that he started the season with a clean slate and has benefitted from that point onwards.

“It’s been a really cool season so far. I’m enjoying myself on the pitch here in Stockholm,” he said.

“I started the year with a clean slate and took a chance; plus, I’m playing in a team with many good players who are a great fit for me.

“Honestly, I don’t think I even dreamed of reaching this point—certainly not in terms of goal contributions and everything that goes with that. It has exceeded all expectations, and it’s been a lot of fun.”
