Some years ago, Gaetano Castrovilli was one of the most promising talents in Italy. His career declined significantly though and this involved a failed move to Bournemouth.

The midfielder is currently without a club, having last played for Cesena last season. After starring at Fiorentina, he had spells at Bari, Monza and Lazio but his career never met the heights it was expected to.

In the summer of 2023, he came close to a move to Bournemouth. A deal fell through due to medical reasons and he has never recovered from the setback.

Now, the 29-year-old has opened up about details regarding his career.

Mental health struggles in the open

Castrovilli spoke to Radio Bruno in a detailed interview and he revealed that he battled depression and the failed Bournemouth deal contributed to that.

He said – via FiorentinaNews: “I would have played my entire career with Fiorentina, but then some things happened that blocked the renewal. But it wasn’t about money. I’m also disappointed with how things went at Bournemouth.”

“I wanted to start a new chapter. I then played for Lazio and Monza , but I risked going into depression, so much so that even today I see a psychologist because I’m still not well.”

Castrovilli also appeared desperate for a new chance at his career.

“I’ve often thought about giving up my career. Now I just want another opportunity: I don’t care where, I just want someone to believe in me because I’m physically well, I’ve recovered and found myself again.”

The Italian also blamed his agent for the abrupt downfall.

“I’m without a team due to some poor decisions made by my agent, who didn’t keep the promises he made to me.”

“He thought I was still the same player I was before, but I’m not, and he thought it was best not to offer me to certain teams when, in fact, I was a potential gamble for everyone, and that’s what should have been done.”

Our take: Downfall definitely sad

When doing well, Castrovilli was one of the most technically gifted midfielders in Serie A. He had the ability to dance past defenders and beat the press. This allowed him to play for the national team too.

Unfortunately, it was a knee injury which ruined his progress and changed his career trajectory.
