Leicester City legend Emile Heskey is refusing to close the door on returning if the League One side were to make an approach.
The former striker spoke to Sport Witness about the Foxes’ current state of affairs.
He was born in Leicester and came through the ranks of the club’s academy before making his way into the first team in 1994.
Heskey scored 41 goals and contributed 10 assists from 171 matches for Leicester City. He won the league cup in 1997 and 2000 and left the Foxes for Liverpool in 2000.
Leicester City up for sale
Emile Heskey is leaving the door open to support his former club to get out of their difficult situation.
Leicester City find themselves in the third division after a nightmare sequence of events. After 12 matches this season, they are 11th in the table, five points behind second placed Stockport County, with a game in hand.
The King Power International Group, led by Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, own the English club and Belgian side OH Leuven. The owners put Leicester City, their training facilities and the Belgian club up for sale for over £200m [€239m].
Heskey praises Leicester City owner
Emile Heskey, who is a Leicester City fan favourite, has close ties with the city and the club. He won’t close the door on his former club to take any suitable role.
When asked what his response would be if the Foxes were to contact him, he said: “Would I get involved with Leicester City? It depends on what capacity really. I’m obviously not qualified to be a manager, so it all depends on what capacity I’m asked.”
“I was born and raised in Leicester, so I couldn’t say no if the club were to get in touch with me. But again, what is the capacity? What is it that they’d want? They have a manager in place, they have all their people in place, so I can’t see them wanting to. I just want to see the club improve its current fortunes.”
With the club up for sale, Sport Witness were curious if any potential buyers have approached him. We also asked the 48-year-old whether he would involve himself in the sale process if asked.
Heskey explained: “No, I haven’t been approached by anyone. It’ll be interesting to see how far down the line they are with a possible takeover. It’s a great club to involved with; they’ve done wonderful things, as you know, but it’s just a bit of a mess right now that just needs ironing out.”
“The current owners were responsible for some wonderful years; unbelievable times. Those memories will live forever with the fans and the city. If they decide to sell, then I hope the new owners can come in and help get the club back to where it belongs.”
