Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle is leading the Premier League side’s pursuit of Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney.

The German coach joined the Magpies in August, after Eddie Howe stepped down from his role at St James’ Park.

He arrived at Newcastle United after spending three years at the Saudi Arabian club. The manager was in charge when Al-Ahli signed Toney from Brentford for a reported fee of €42m in August 2024.

The striker scored 86 goals and contributed 19 assists from 107 matches for Al-Ahli and 72 goals and 17 assists under Jaissle. The England international has maintained his form this season, managing 14 goals and two assists from 14 matches.

Newcastle United manager keen on Toney

Saudi journalist Khalid Al-Shenaif took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report that the Magpies want to sign him. WinWin relay the comments and updates shared by the journalist.

Al-Shenaif explains Matthias Jaissle wants to reunite with the 30-year-old at Newcastle United. For now, there are no negotiations and the two clubs haven’t found an agreement.

“Jaissle definitely wants to sign him. If this happens, it will undoubtedly be a major crisis,” he said.

The Middle East club have scored 27 goals in the league and Ivan Toney had a hand in 15 of them. Therefore, the journalist warns it will be a huge blow for his club if he were to return to England.

There’s no clarity whether they want to sign the frontman in January or next summer.

Newcastle United can avoid tough negotiations

Ivan Toney’s contract expires in 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €20m. Without a renewal, his club have to decide on his future next year.

Saudi’s Public Investment Fund [PIF] own both Al-Ahli and the Tyneside club. This may make a potential negotiation for the former Brentford star relatively easier for Newcastle United.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo joined the English club from Lille on deadline day. He’s yet to open his account while two other strikers, Yoane Wissa and William Osula, each have a goal and an assist in the league.

Toney’s addition can improve Newcastle United’s strike force. His experience of playing in England and working under Matthias Jaissle could help him settle in quickly if he were to join them.
