It’s been a few years since Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo started being linked with an exit from the Lisbon club.

Now with the Eagles also interested in selling him, it’s natural to see the Portuguese media claiming he should leave them this summer, as he’s been heavily linked to a move back to Spain.

However, in a story from journalist Rudy Galetti, we now get to see a Premier League side included in the race for Grimaldo as well, and that’s Newcastle United.

The reporter claims the left-back could leave the Eagles this summer, and says the Magpies are alongside Barcelona and Juventus as the ‘most interested’ clubs in his signing.

Galetti’s report doesn’t say how much Newcastle or the others would need to pay to sign the fullback this summer, but he’s protected by a €60m release clause, and currently valued by Transfermarkt at €20m.

Despite not having his best days for Benfica, Grimaldo was still involved in 15 goals from the Eagles this season, with six scored and nine assists made.

With the Portuguese media never mentioning Newcastle in the race for him, let’s see how they react to this story in the coming days.
