Manchester United have decided to get into the battle with Liverpool for Benfica star Enzo Fernández.

That’s according to UOL, who state Erik ten Hag’s side have made the midfielder their priority target in 2023.

It’s claimed Manchester United and Liverpool are the ‘main favourites’ in the race to sign the 21-year-old in the winter market.

The Argentina international joined the Primeira Liga side from River Plate in the summer and has quickly established himself. He has three goals and five assists from 24 matches for the Eagles this season. The player also starred at the World Cup in Qatar.

Manchester United are said to have indicated they are willing to pay Fernández’s €120m release clause in January. It’s even claimed they are better positioned than Liverpool in the chase for his signature.

Both Manchester United and the Merseyside club are looking to bolster their midfield, with the latter also having Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham on their agenda.

UOL’s report was covered by Bruno Andrade and the journalist took to Twitter to provide additional information on the Red Devils’ pursuit of Fernández.

He states Manchester United have already started talks with all parties involved and are willing the pay the €120m clause to ‘avoid any competition’ to sign the World Cup winner.

On Friday, Portuguese journalist Pedro Sepúlveda reported Benfica will ‘only sell’ the star in January if his €120m release clause is trigged. UOL now explain Manchester United are willing to meet their demands to secure Fernández’s services.
