Since Crystal Palace owner John Textor completed the purchase of Botafogo in Brazil, he’s become a football celebrity in the country, as he’s often giving interviews and sounding really excited about his project.

It turns out the businessman is now mentioned in the local media’s crime section, about a scam being carried out by someone else.

As reported by R7, on Wednesday, the Brazilian police arrested Victor Mendes, who was claiming to be John Textor on social media.

According to the story, the criminal pretended to be a ‘sugar daddy’ on the internet, but when promising to financially help others with their finances, he’d ask for small cryptocurrency amounts first.

The Crystal Palace owner has several Instagram pictures travelling around the world and especially visiting Brazil, where he often takes photographs with famous footballers. So when those images were used, that’s what made it look like a real person for people who don’t know a lot about football.

R7 says Victor Mendes would ask his victims for US$100 and promised a return of US$3k, which would obviously never happen. It seems it didn’t take long for fans discover the same and notify the police.

As well as being a shareholder at Botafogo and Crystal Palace, John Textor also owns Lyon and RWD Molenbeek.
