Powerless to stop Carlo Ancelotti from returning to Real Madrid when the opportunity presented itself, Everton have had to plan for many unexpected events this summer.

Another has been their battle with FFP regulations, which has seen them forced to be very careful on the transfer market, as shown by their low-cost deal to sign Demarai Gray and free moves for Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic.

The other arrivals have been the loan returns of Moise Kean, Jonjoe Kenny and an injured Cenk Tosun, and their inability to even muster €15m or so to sign Denzel Dumfries shows the little money Marcel Brands has to work with during the transfer window.

That’s why seeing Everton linked with someone like André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is somewhat surprising, especially since Fulham are unlikely to want to let him go on the cheap.

They might be in the Championship and he might want Premier League football, but there is still a £22m+ transfer from Marseille to recover money for, and they won’t want to make any presents to interested parties.

Despite this, Gazzetta dello Sport explain the ‘player is of interest to Everton and Aston Villa’, as they are presented as the two main competitors for José Mourinho’s AS Roma, who are also looking at him as a Granit Xhaka alternative.

It would be extremely surprising to see the Toffees splash the cash this summer, and if they did, moving for someone like Dumfries would make a lot more sense.

We’ll keep an eye on this, but barring a loan deal, this seems like a bit much for Everton’s tight pursestrings right now.
