When Paris Saint-Germain decided to sack Thomas Tuchel back in December 2020, they had no idea their move would completely backfire.

Not only did they fail to win Ligue 1, as Lille pipped them to the title, but the German manager was quickly picked up by Chelsea, who went on to win the Champions League, the Ligue 1 club’s ultimate dream, with him at the helm.

Beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final, the Blues’ decision to replace Frank Lampard with Tuchel gave them the perfect reward, while Paris Saint-Germain looked on, hoping Mauricio Pochettino would be the man to help them improve in Europe.

There’s still a chance he does, although the task of facing Real Madrid in the very near future makes the task that little bit harder, and there’s now every chance the Argentine, who isn’t entirely happy in the French capital, leaves the cub at the end of the season.

There were rumours he could do so midway through the campaign, as Manchester United were reportedly circling around him, but that didn’t happen, and L’Equipe journalist Damien Degorre explained why on L’Equipe du Soir, relayed by Paris Fans.

He said: “Just before or just after Manchester City, there was talk that Pochettino wouldn’t finish the season, and, from what I know, there has never been the idea of parting ways with Pochettino midseason for one reason.

“Paris Saint-Germain were traumatised by what happened with Tuchel, who was sacked in December and won the Champions League in June. The idea that would be reproduced with Pochettino was out of the question.”
