Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ Hwang Hee-chan has to impress at Schalke this season to join them permanently next summer, and is planning to emulate Raúl
The forward initially joined Wolves on loan from RB Leipzig in August 2021 and made his stay permanent a year later.
At Molineux, he mainly operated as a striker and left winger. Hwang managed 27 goals and 12 assists from 150 matches for Wolves.
Last season, he was leading the attack in the Premier League as Wolves dropped out of the top flight.
Raul Jimenez returned to the club in the summer and the South Korea international dropped down the pecking order. Therefore, the latter moved to Schalke on loan with an option to buy.
Schalke waited until end for Wolves man
Thursday’s edition of Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung have a report about the 30-year-old and his start to his life in Germany.
The Bundesliga side finalised his loan transfer from Wolves with just ’35 seconds left on the clock’.
He watched the home draw to Bayern Munich from the stands. Hwang Hee-chan made his Schalke debut in their 3-1 away win over Union Berlin. He came off the bench to assist Max Wöber’s third goal of the match.
Earlier this week, the Wolves owned player spoke to the media to share his views on his return to Germany. He’s eager to play in front of the Schalke fans soon.
“The club is fantastic, the fans too. I’ve felt that ever since I arrived. The atmosphere [at home against Bayern] was incredible. I can’t wait to play in front of the home crowd myself,” he said.
Wolves man idolising former Real Madrid star
Schalke have secured a purchase option and WAZ states they can offer him his last big contract if he were to shine this season.
Hwang Hee-chan played alongside Raul Jimenez in his first two years at Wolves. In June, he talked about his special bond with the 35-year-old Mexico international.
He’s wearing the No.7 at Schalke, previously worn by his former teammate’s namesake, Raúl.
The former attacker spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid and left them for Schalke in 2010.
Raúl spent two years with the German club before moving to Al Sadd in 2012.
During his time at Schalke, Raúl starred for them, managing 40 goals and 21 assists from 98 matches. He played a key role in helping them win the DFB-Supercup and DFB-Pokal in 2011. The latter was Schalke’s last major trophy.
This shows the impact the Spaniard had during his short spell in Germany. Hwang now wants to replicate the Spaniard’s goalscoring form at Schalke, with a hope of joining them permanently.
“Raúl is a great legend, and I’m trying to have the same impact on the team. Even though I know that will be very difficult,” Hwang explained.
