Tottenham Hotspur loaned out Radu Dragusin to Fiorentina in the summer. The defender’s agent has now opened up about the transfer.
SportWitness were regularly tracking the player’s situation since January. AS Roma and AC Milan were interested then but Spurs never opened up to a deal on their terms.
Dragusin continued to struggle for game time and Fiorentina then stepped in during the summer. The deal was done quickly, as La Viola have an obligation to buy him permanently.
The player’s agent has spoken about the move, revealing key details of the deal and how it came about.
Player wanted permanent transfer
Florin Manea spoke to ViolaNews about his client. He was asked several questions and during all that, he revealed he views the Fiorentina transfer as a way to rebuild Dragusin’s career.
“This is the idea. He arrived on loan with an obligation to buy based on a certain number of appearances. He’s someone who came with desire. He didn’t want a loan, he wanted to be bought outright. Now he’ll give it his all. His life is in Florence.”
Manea also noted that Spurs weren’t open to letting him depart in January.
“Not just Fiorentina, but Tottenham were also in trouble, fighting for survival. They weren’t ready to loan him out, and Radu had just returned after a year out. It wasn’t the right time yet.”
The agent added that Fabio Paratici proved key to the move, having worked with Dragusin at Tottenham too.
“I’ve known Fabio since he brought him to Juventus at 16. Fabio has always believed in Radu, even extending his contract during his time at Juventus. Paratici was one of the key players in his move to Tottenham, and we have faith in him.”
“Radu considers him one of the best directors in Italy. We didn’t think much about it, even though the situation was different last winter. There were a couple of teams, but nothing materialised in January. When Paratici called in the summer, we were quick. We know who we’re working with.”
Our take: Defender will be a key player
So far this season, it is clear that Dragusin will be a regular at Fiorentina. The Romanian has started every game and also started under new manager Paolo Vanoli against Venezia.
This suggests he will be at the centre of the project and the club has big plans for him.
He is still only 24 and that is why the Fiorentina spell will come in very handy. It can act as the right foundation for him to rebuild his career and play regularly, after his ACL injury last year. This is a shot at redemption that he just can’t afford to mess up.
