Celtic were pushing to sign Gvidas Gineitis in the summer transfer window. A deal failed and the player’s form has now also dropped.
Hours before the Italian transfer window shut, the Hoops continued to chase the Lithuanian. It was clear that several bids were rejected as Torino’s demands were never met.
Nothing materialised for Celtic, as Torino signed two midfielders in Daniel Bragança and Rolando Mandragora.
Now, uncertainty about Gineitis is growing further.
Player is having a wobble
ToroNews note that so far this season, Gineitis has started all six games for the Granata. He has also done well in several outings, even if Torino have just one win in the Serie A.
But his performance against AS Roma didn’t please Ignazio Abate. The Italian ‘left him the locker room’ at half time, as Braganca came on and had a pretty good second-half.
It is believed this is a sign of things to come for the 22-year-old. His performances haven’t been convincing. The outlet note he ‘ran a lot’ against Roma but ‘in vain’.
As a result, he is no longer ‘untouchable’ and Torino are more than willing to part ways. Bragança and Mandragora are expected to be the starters in midfield and a January exit is on the cards for Gineitis.
Our take: Transfer chance for Celtic
Some weeks ago, the Lithuania international was valued at around €10m. With his fall from prominence, his valuation could go down.
This could be a big chance for Celtic, who clearly wanted him in the summer. The player wants a change of scenery and he could also play in Europe, if he joins the Glasgow giants. That would present a career upgrade.
Since he came through Torino’s youth setup, anything Il Toro earn will go down as a capital gain. It won’t be a surprise if the Hoops take advantage of this in January.
