West Ham United‘s Edson Álvarez will be the first major absentee from Mexico manager Rafael Márquez’s list for the upcoming international break.
El Tri will face Colombia, Peru, the USA and Chile in friendlies in September and October.
The West Ham player is likely to miss these four friendlies because of multiple reasons.
In the summer, he returned to the London club after a loan spell at Fenerbahçe. The 28-year-old wasn’t keen on staying with the Hammers, who dropped to the Championship.
Real Sociedad, Ajax and Olympiacos all showed interest, but a move never took shape for various reasons.
Nuno Espírito Santo started him in their 3-1 EFL Cup win over Portsmouth on August 8th. Since then, the manager has left him out of the squad for nine consecutive matches.
On September 9th, Sport Witness covered a report from Mexico explaining that West Ham are punishing him for refusing to leave in the summer.
Two days later, Márquez said he held talks with Álvarez regarding his difficult situation in England.
West Ham struggles impacting NT
Later that day, the Mexican media reported the national team manager has decided to drop him because of his personal drama. His lack of minutes at West Ham United and his refusal to leave the Championship side has had no impact.
TUDN journalist Gibrán Araige states otherwise as he reports Edson Álvarez’s personal drama and the West Ham struggles are reasons for his omission.
“After seven matchdays, ‘El Machín’ has not played a single minute for West Ham in the Championship and is not in the coach’s plans. Added to this is his off-field situation in Mexico. El Tri begins a new era without Edson,” he said.
Media Tiempo are also stating the former Ajax man will be the ‘first major absence’ from Rafael Márquez’s first list. They are citing his inactivity with the Championship side as the reason.
In short, the player’s situation is going from bad to worse. If there’s no changes in the coming weeks at West Ham United, it’ll be best for him to find a way out in January.

El Tri appointed Rafael Márquez as their new manager in July, succeeding Javier Aguirre. The latter left after the national team’s campaign at the World Cup.
