Mexico manager Rafael Márquez says West Ham United‘s Edson Álvarez is going through a difficult phase with the Championship side.
The midfielder joined the Hammers from Ajax in 2023 and was a regular in the first two seasons.
Last summer, West Ham sent him on loan to Fenerbahçe, where he struggled with form and fitness, restricting his game time. To put it in context, he played 1,126 minutes from 28 matches. This convinced them not to make his stay permanent.
Álvarez not part of Nuno’s plans at West Ham
The 28-year-old returned to the London club and Real Sociedad, Olympiacos and Club América were his options in the summer. Armando González’s father even confirmed the Greek club showed interest.
He didn’t secure a move elsewhere and has played 75 minutes in the EFL Cup win over Portsmouth on August 8th.
Since then, Nuno Espírito Santo has left the Mexico international out of his squad for seven consecutive matches.

In July, Mexico appointed Rafael Márquez as Javier Aguirre’s successor. On Thursday, he was speaking about several topics related to the national team.
Milenio have relayed the national team manager’s comments about Edson Álvarez’s tough phase at West Ham United. He’s unsure whether the midfielder wants to play in the Championship.
“I don’t know if he doesn’t want to play in the second division; that’s something I don’t know. I have spoken with Edson. We’ve been in contact with him,” he said.
“Of course, Edson is a very important player for us; he’s a role model, a leader, and also the captain of the national team.”
“Unfortunately, yes, he’s not going through a good time, and we’re going to try to help him as much as we can because, as a national team, we also have to support these kinds of players who have given everything for their country, who have been there for their country, and now that things might not be going well for them, we have to support them as such. I think he’s earned it.”
