Nottingham Forest parted ways with Omari Hutchinson late in the summer transfer window. Signs of promise around the attacker are now emerging.
The Englishman came in as a direct replacement for Rafael Leao, who joined Galatasaray. Clearly, Hutchinson had big shoes to fill and had to also adapt to Ruben Amorim’s system.
He revealed that the Portuguese was key to his transfer, as he had specific plans for him in the setup.
The winger had been a regular for Milan in the Europa League until now. But things are changing for the better.
Marinakis decision paying off
Hutchinson scored his first Serie A goal for Milan on Sunday, helping the Rossoneri to a convincing 2-0 win over Udinese. The Nottingham Forest loanee started on the right of the attacking midfield and it was also his first start in the league.
Gianluca Di Marzio adds some background to the transfer, saying that it was seen as a gamble early on. This is especially true because Milan inserted a €50m option to buy in a loan deal worth €3.5m.
Evangelos Marinakis’ role in the deal is believed to be key. He has a good relationship with Milan’s owner Gerry Cardinale and that led to the initial loan deal.
But more than that, it is Amorim’s usage that has turned the tide. He has increased Hutchinson’s game time gradually, with the player also taking advantage of injuries in the squad.
The Nottingham Forest loanee’s game time is likely to increase now, with Amorim handing him more responsibility.
Our take: Player settling in well
Initially, Amorim used the 22-year-old in a right wing-back spot in the Europa League. Even then, the player showed glimpses of his ability but his best clearly comes closer to goal. Amorim seems to have realised that, leading to him playing in the front three.
That is a good sign and shows that the player is indeed settling in well.
Milan have a dressing room where several players speak English, which is another positive. But he is featuring in a system which is settled and is quickly helping players thrive. There is every chance things improve further soon.
